About
Shasta County's Public Health
Bioterrorism / Disaster Preparedness Program:

With the ever present threat of bioterrorism and the reality of natural disasters that could evolve into large scale health emergencies, Shasta County Public Health (SCPH) established an Emergency Preparedness Unit (EPU) in its Communicable Disease Emergency Preparedness Division. This five person team works closely with local, regional and state partners to ensure Public Health is fully integrated into the overall response network.

The EPU developed, oversees and maintains the department’s emergency response plans, systems and resources. The EPU also facilitates staff training and participation in emergency drills, exercises, and public health emergency response throughout the year.

EPU staff serve as the lead for various priority projects including Pandemic Flu Preparedness, Management of the Strategic National Stockpile, Mass Clinic Operations, Alternate Care Site planning, the Hospital Preparedness Program, use of the California Health Alert Network (CAHAN), Response to a Biohazard Detection System alarm, the Department Operations Center and public education and awareness.

Working closely with EPU staff and providing essential response related services are SCPH Microbiologists, Public Health Nurses, Epidemiologists, Analysts, Community Relations and the Deputy Health Officer. This cadre of dedicated, trained and proficient staff forms the nucleus of technical expertise that can assess a situation and advise senior management about effective courses of action to take to respond to any level of an emergency that may impact the citizens of Shasta County.
