The First 72 Is Up To You
Siskiyou
County Public Health

2004
- In
an ever changing world, risks considered a remote
possibility, have now become real. Siskiyou County
Public Health is learning and accepting the role
of and the challenges associated with becoming
a First Responder in the event of biological
terrorist activity and to continue to expand
our role in the event of natural or other man
made disaster situations. |

As
a county we need to learn to prepare to be self
sufficient for up to 72 hours -- “The
First 72 Is Up To You”. We cannot depend on initial
outside assistance and must prepare ourselves
and our families adequately for all types of
emergencies- both natural and man made. By preparing
ourselves and assuring the safety of our families,
we will be more equipped to provide assistance
to others in our community. |

To
prepare for our role in a biological event, we
have actively participated in the National Smallpox
Vaccination Program and have staff members educated,
trained and vaccinated against smallpox to provide
immediate response if the need arises. We are
networking with law enforcement, fire and other
traditional first responder agencies to ensure
a prompt response can be achieved. To help us
achieve this working relationship, Public Health
staff has been trained in and uses the Incident
Command System for disease outbreak investigations.
This allows us to work with the same incident
management structure as all other first responders
and incorporate our roles and theirs more easily. |

As
we continue to expand our roles to “Protect
the Public’s Health”, Siskiyou County
will meet whatever challenges are presented to
us and work together to gain the best possible
outcomes for all our residents. |
