- Disasters Know No Boundaries
Public Health Professionals Work Together to Create
Regional Bioterrorism / Disaster Preparedness Web Site |
September
2004 - Public
Health Professionals from the 13
Northern California counties in
the Office
of Emergency Services Mutual
Aid Region
III have joined together
to develop a new Bioterrorism
/ Disaster Preparedness web site.
They understand that public health
incidents and disasters, natural
or man-made, have no boundaries.
The NorCalBT.com Project was funded by a Department of Health
Services, Emergency Preparedness Office grant to enhance
a regional approach to bioterrorism / disaster preparedness
and response, Region
III counties have worked to develop a unique resource for
their residents.

Nip
Boyes, Glenn County Co-Coordinator
of the NorCalBT Web Site
Project announced, “By
creating the NorCalBT.com
web site, each public health
agency within Region III
will be able to provide major
support for county and statewide
bioterrorism / disaster readiness.” Boyes
continued, “Nearly
750,000 people in Region
III will need immediate access
to information regarding
bioterrorism / disaster preparedness or
response if there is an event
that affects public health.
This web site will serve
as a resource to both public
and professionals during
such an event.”
He added, “The Bioterrorism / Disaster Coordinators
realize that working together with other agencies at
the local, regional and state levels is an absolute necessity
for the best response possible for public safety. “
Vickee Greer, Sierra County Co-Coordinator of the project
stated, “The Region III project is unusual because
public health professionals from all 13 counties joined
together to support the project application and all phases
of building this web site.” She added, “They
recognized the need and have worked to provide current
and accurate information for this site. Each county has
its own section within the web site specific to public
health bioterrorism / disaster preparedness and response
for the county’s residents to access.”
Vickee
and Nip agree that the contractor
for this project, Visual Imagry,
Inc. is responsible for its
design and valuable concepts.
Dee and Don Beaugez have developed
NorCalBT.com specifically with
the needs of the public and
a target group of professionals
in mind. Dee stated, “This
is about information; information
for the public and information
for health care professionals.” Dee
continued, “One
key issue required in the design
of this site is the need for
it to be easy to use. We want
people using this site to be
comfortable moving around in
it. It is designed for the
public to use it in advance
of a public health bioterrorism incident.”
Vickee
added, “NorCalBT
will be a vehicle for public
health professionals to provide
preparedness and response updates
to both public and professionals
in the event of a bioterrorism
event, infectious disease or
other public health threat
or emergency.”
NorCalBT
was completed in September
2004.
